Carr Architectural Graduate Rebecca Mallaby has unanimously been awarded the 2025 Bluescope Glenn Murcutt Student Prize for her university project the Common Space.

Awarded biennially, the Bluescope Glenn Murcutt Student Prize recognises outstanding architectural student work that demonstrates excellence in response to place, technology and Australian culture.
Nominated by her tertiary institution, Monash University, Rebecca’s project is located in the Melbourne suburb of South Caulfield. Nestled within the landscape, the proposal serves as a unique housing model that does not compromise on social amenity.
Employing modular design and sustainable technologies, the Common Space is adaptable to different demographics and needs, depicting three varying experiments of apartment types, block configurations and circulation methods.

Lastly, the project redefines communal living through intimate, shared arrangements that cultivate strong neighbourly connections.
The project’s innovative approach to affordable housing not only addresses economic disparities but also empowers residents with a sense of ownership and belonging, something prioritised in Australian culture.
Upon receiving the award at The Sydney Opera House during the Australian Architecture Conference, Rebecca said:
“This project began as a response to urgent questions around housing affordability and social isolation, embracing flexibility, inclusion, and social connection. Although fictitious, I hope this can highlight, even in a small way, how we design for people and place – no matter their social, cultural or economic status. What my architectural education to date has taught me, is that thoughtful design should not only be a luxury, but a human right.”
Congratulations, Rebecca, on your outstanding achievement!
