A considered renewal of a Victorian home, where heritage fabric and contemporary living are brought into alignment.

Located within the established residential character of Brighton, the original Victorian residence is defined by its formal symmetry, fine heritage detailing and connection to its garden setting. At the centre of the front garden stands a mature magnolia tree, aligned to the home’s primary axis and understood to have been planted at the time of the house’s original construction. Over time, the tree has become inseparable from the identity of the home, acting as both a visual anchor and a reminder of its history.

The project carefully restores the heritage façade and principal rooms of the original dwelling, preserving the character and proportions that define the Victorian home. The new addition has been designed as a calm and contemporary counterpart, distinct from the original building while remaining respectful of it. Rather than replicating heritage detailing, the design takes a quieter approach, allowing old and new to sit alongside one another with clarity and balance.

A glazed connection links the original home with the new addition.
Openings are carefully positioned to frame views and bring in natural light.

A glazed connection links the original home with the new addition, creating a gentle transition between the two. Moving through this space offers a moment to experience the contrast between old and new, from changes in scale and materiality to shifting views of the surrounding landscape.

The new addition is arranged around a series of calm, light-filled spaces that strengthen the home’s connection to the garden and sky. Openings are carefully positioned to frame views and bring natural light deep into the interiors, while the ground floor living spaces open directly to the reworked garden and pool area. Above, the primary suite is designed as a private retreat, balancing openness with a sense of privacy through its connection to an outdoor terrace.

“Carr delivered a project which has exceeded our expectations – they have created more than just a better home but something special for my family. They have respected and enhanced the history of a house which is more than 150 years old and have seamlessly blended the old with the new. We could not speak more highly of Sue and her whole team.””

The landscape design was developed as an extension of the architecture, creating a series of outdoor spaces that support connection, outlook and family life. Delivered in close collaboration with the client, builder Turn Group and landscape contractor BTD, the project reflects a shared commitment to thoughtful design and careful execution.

Central to the project was the relationship with the client. Developed over an extended design process, the brief evolved through ongoing dialogue and trust, shaping a home that responds closely to the way the family lives. The result is a home that feels both considered and personal, extending the life of the original residence while supporting contemporary family living.
