River Street Hotel Melbourne

Architecture

Set to cement Melbourne as Australia’s design destination, Carr has revealed the Architecture and Interiors for what is to become one of Australia’s landmark hotels.

On a prime site in the heart of South Yarra, the hotel is distinct in its use of white glass and metal to create a mono chromatic scheme that is at once refined and enduring.

The upper form containing guest suites is intentionally simple and considered.

Wrapped in white, translucent glass, this accommodation form benefits from subtle illumination from within when suites are in use thereby creating an animated, patterned, almost sculptural effect from the street. Designed to glow from within, the contrast between opaque, translucent and transparent creates an ethereal and minimalist structure and a unique, edgy presence.

The lower form, consisting of a two level podium, creates a dramatic contrast. Clad in a dark metallic materiality with a structural form defined by sheer blades and articulated planes, the effect is of solidity, strength and rigorous detailing forming the base from which the suites sit lightly above.

The interiors will see suites as monochromatic, moody and sophisticated spaces of retreat and sanctuary with an authenticity true to Melbourne’s elegance and cultural heritage.

The project will consist of 150 suites, rooftop terrace and pool, restaurants and bars and is set to become a building characterised by its simple geometric form and expressive use of materials.
