Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club
The design and construction works for Royal South Yarra Tennis Club are now complete. Carr have taken great pleasure in leading the architectural development works to provide a consolidated vision for Royal South Yarra.
Central to the redevelopment of the Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club was the need to provide greater appeal to a broad member group, respecting the traditions of history whilst providing a new architectural direction.
The extension is set as a bold counterpoint to the existing white rendered building. Meeting the building with a deep, double height recess, the new charcoal clad extension pulls away from the white horizontal form. The extension houses fitness and change facilities at first floor and hospitality spaces at second floor. The two storey cantilevered volume floats over a densely planted undercroft which will thicken into a lush green carpet, extending visually from the grass courts adjacent.
Providing an accessible entrance was key with a lift now serving each of the three floors. Flush face tinted glazing maximises view opportunities at first floor, enabling a strong visual link to the lawn tennis courts.
The project was designed for a conservative $2,000/sqm for all 2,000sqm of refurbished space, achieving the $4.0M construction budget set by the client at the outset. Since completing in August 2011 members have returned to the club in large numbers, achieving the core brief of providing spaces for all ages.
