The Boston Consulting Group Canberra
Interior Design 2012
The new office of The Boston Consulting Group sits in the heart of Australia's "bush" capital. As the lift doors of the modern, non-descript office building open one is greeted by surprise; two large 'nests' float in the space, with waves of ‘green foliage’ suspended above.
The first nest is open towards the entry and contains the reception. The second nest is shielded from the entry view. The curves of the two nests are referenced in soft grey felt walls, that gently envelope the meeting rooms. The second nest then reveals itself as a sheltered seat with a large round table, enabling the team to get together to discuss, debate and celebrate. The adjacent bar area has a wine rack with a selection of fine Australian wines, from the Capital Territory and beyond, supporting social interaction.
While the firm is global, the local client base in Canberra is mainly comprised of the Australian Federal government sector. The brief was to create a professional but unique office that felt more approachable than corporate. There is a strong reference to BCG's core branding colour, green. This neatly ties in with the connection to the outdoors. On offer are stunning panoramic views of the surrounding forests and mountains.
While there are operational similarities between the team structure in BCG's other offices, the major difference is the high frequency of fly-in team members from interstate. On the work floor the informal outdoor concept is continued, providing visiting team members with a large timber bench for use as a communal desk. A planted hedge to the perimeter blurs the divide between the inside and out.
Technology integrates seamlessly within the environment, providing the local team with a world-class VC room and technology hubs throughout the office.
The new BCG Canberra workplace aims to increase local public awareness of the firm through a distinctive design response, a well feathered new nest!
